This club is hosted by parent volunteers who assemble their teams with the help of classroom teachers.  You do not sign up for this club through our After School Enrichment Clubs.

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving competition for students of all ages.  Teams of 5-7 students select a problem, create a solution, and then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division. Students apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

Sample timeline for a new coach:

  • October: Start advertising that you are coaching a new team.  If more than 7 students are interested, plan for one or two after-school “play dates”; this will allow you (the new coach) to watch the students interact and choose the team members.

  • November: Start weekly meetings.  Focus on team-building.

  • December: Introduce the OM problem to the team.  Focus on helping them understand the problem and break it into smaller pieces that they can work on each week.

  • Late Dec to Early Feb: Work on the problem! (storyline, costumes, props, etc.)

  • Late Feb: Practice, practice, practice!

  • Mar 5: Regional Tournament

  • After: End of season party
